 Dear Mr Quirke,

We are writing to inform you of the completion of our studies on the Kangchenjunga 1998 expedition, and  to thank you for your support. Overall, the expedition has been a great success, and in particular the  research aspects went very well. We were able to collect most of the data that we had intended, and are  now busy analysing our results.

The four MicroLoop II spirometers and two MicroPlus spirometers supplied by you worked very well and  we did not encounter any problems with their use at altitude (5,000 m), which we were delighted with.  Some other research groups' projects in this large medical research expedition were bought to a  premature end when their equipment succumbed to large temperature swings and adverse conditions. The  software programme that Brian Rayner has adapted for our use was excellent and was a credit to all his  hard work.

In total we spent 14 days at base camp (above 5,00m altitude). There were 70 members on the expedition;  a combination of researchers, trekkers and climbers. We carried out most of our research between the  hours of 09:00 and 16:30, when it was not too cold and there was enough sun to provide power via the  solar panels. The research was sited in large frame tents with the most spectacular backdrop of the  snow-covered mountains, Kangchenjunga and Wedge Peak, that you could ever imagine for any research  laboratory. The full expedition report will soon be available on our website (address below), and we  would be pleased to send you a hard copy of this when it is available. We have photos and slides of the  equipment in use, and will send you copies of these if you are interested.

Already the analysis of the data has started with some promising results. We have already submitted  abstracts for presentation at the international conference "Hypoxia 99" in Jasper (Canada) in February  1999, and plan for further presentations as we analyse more data and ultimately publication in an  International Journal. We look forward to corresponding with you in the future. In the meantime, please  contact us if you would like any further information.

 Yours sincerely,
